People Don't Understand What I'm Talking About

In my job, I'm required to explain the state of my projects to my superiors and peers. I find that after a minute or so, I get this stare like "What are you talking about?" I now know (took me long enough) that my explanations are too vague. I tend to "Hit the highlights" or make incomplete statements.

Now that I've recognized this, I should be able to pay more attention to what I'm saying. I've got to admit that I'm improving, but I would like to know why I do this. Sometimes I'll be talking and not know what I'm saying.
