I Think A Lot Of Republicans Have Gone Off The Deep End
The GOP has decided to not only to double down on its efforts to stifle the US economy, but now they are determined to block any new members of the Obama cabinet. What riles me the most about their actions on Chuck Hagel, is that most of the cowards blocking the vote on his nomination never served a single day in the military, much less in a combat capacity. As a Vietnam vet, that chaps my as*s to no end.
The reasoning behind their actions now, or so they say, is to make the Obama administration release additional documents about the Libya attack. What the hell does Chuck Hagel have to do with that? What the hell does the Sec. of Defense have to do with that? It was a State Dept. situation and the Pentagon was never asked for help.
Another reason they give is that he has said things that can be taken that he does not fully support Israel. Israel is a sovereign country that does quite well with the funds handed to it by the US and with the weapons of war that it buys from US defense contractors. However, as with the event in Libya, our relationship with Israel is a State Dept. situation.
Finally, the GOP does not like the fact that Chuck Hagel has voiced concerns while he was still in the Senate, about out actions in Iraq. The fact is, most Americans now know that our invasion of Iraq was the result of false information and outright disinformation. Mr. Hagel realized that and made it public. he knows what it is like to serve in a combat situation, as he served two tours in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart.
For the GOP, which is full of cowards that love to send men and women with lesser financial means than they themselves have ever been accustomed to, to attack Mr. Hagel for his views on sending our troops into combat as a last resort, is sickening.
As a Vietnam vet, and for two guys that work for me that are also Vietnam vets, to see both a Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, both who served in Vietnam, nominated for these positions, makes us feel very proud. Finally, guys that know what it is like to serve in a combat situation. Very different than Cheney, that was a coward and never served. Very different than Rumsfeld, that was despised by the US military brass. Very different than almost all of the cowards in the US Senate that never served, nor have their kids. I guess that maybe the GOP Senators would prefer to see Mitt Romney as the Secretary of Defense. he fits right into the mold like they do.
Chuck Hagel will be confirmed by the full Senate after the weeklong recess. Most of us Vietnam vets will be cheering. I have breakfast every Friday with a guy that is our county GOP Chairman, and he too is a Vietnam vet. He also is very proud to see Chuck Hagel nominated. The actions of the GOP is a political party thing. The defense of our country is not political. yeah, maybe Mr. Hagel doesn't give exactly the right answers to twisted questions. That sure doesn't make him any less qualified. To most of Vietnam vets, we couldn't get a more qualified person.
Chuck Hagel will be confirmed in a little over a week. The GOP babies can cry about something else.
