I think FB has algorithms designed so that the people you interact with most, appear more in your feeds. If not, it sure seems that way. It's easy to forget the people you don't interact with as much.

I'm not really achieving much socially at the moment. No pictures to show for what I do actually accomplish with my time. I'm not narcassistic enough to have people take photos of me at the gym or skating. There's nothing to show for the boring job I have. Nobody would want to see photos of me writing emails to get a fundraising event organised etc. Not even sure if my league knows how annoying it is to deal with bureaucracy within and frustration when people don't answer their emails promptly.

I agree with you all... Facebook is ok if you're trying to promote something via social networking, but I really don't think it fosters intimacy in friendships at all - quite the opposite. I believe it is one of the many things which contributes to the sense of alienation pervading our society.

Personally I've not had a facebook or myspace account & don't see the need. I've seen my kids facebook pages and I don't see what all the fuss is about.

I have friends I keep in touch with that are no longer near me and have for many years. Before the internet it was with snail mail and since the internet it's been email.

As far as the "friends" thing goes. If I've not talked to them in a couple of months or more then they are merely acquittance and not really a friend. There is a huge difference between the two.

The same with my "cyber friends". I have two here and had over 200 on my other blog that I visit daily. I've recently started thinning out my "friends" list on the other blog site as I've not heard a word from at least 180 of them in over a year.

There's my 2 cents worth of opinion about facebook. :~D

You really said when you likened it to being one step away from having imaginary friends. That really is a great way to describe it. I no longer use mine because to be honest I like my privacy and I like to hang out with a select number of people, and its fun. When I was on FB I was caught up on everything happening to everyone that sometimes I didnt have a social bone left in my body lol I think it will be on its way out soon. It stayed around so long because it has such a wide basis of users. Myspace had that too but look what happened with that. Nobody even talks about it anymore haha.

I didn't like the spirit of it, very superficial and snobbish without class and very alcohol-oriented!

Yeah - I think that curiosity about people we used to know can definitely be an impetus to further use Facebook (etc.) accounts. It's fine if it comes from a "nice" place, but one of the things which annoys me about Facebook is that people one hasn't seen since, say, Primary School (and couldn't stand even then!) find out that you have an account & attempt to become your "friends" out of sheer curiosity.

I also have only posted one photo, & its on my Profile!

I regret opening my facebook account. My curiosity about people I used to know got me started. I haven't even posted ONE picture of myself because I couldn't be fussed. It seems like a waste of time and potential for angst.

I guess that's why these differnt formats and sites were created. They were just ideas someone had, to connect people. The format of it was just experimental. i mean, humans want to connect and love showing off. some are more shy or private than others.

I say, horses for courses. meaning just sign up for whichever format you want to connect and comment and post to! Personally, i hate the whole stupid blogging idea. Now there's a waste of every evening reading someone else's whole boring life story, or ideas, or travels....

I reckon by now there must be 1000s of blogging sites.

How many blogs really get read? and really...who cares/??????

If i had a 'successful' or 'popular' blog, with 2000 subscribers to my page, i'd think there's another 2000 people with no real life...just like you could accuse facebookers of???? (or is it, facehookers???lol)

They rather call it Fakebook. It's like leaving your front door open, so any passer by could go in to check out on you. And some really think it's cool.

Then Fakebook suggests you choose people u don't even know, since someone on your list has that person added.

But look at the bright side...at least EP won't be flooded by more showoffs and slow down the system. It would be such waste of bandwidth.

Wow! I'm glad other people seem to share my views on this... I thought it may come across as a tad too brutal. But I was discussing this on the phone with a good friend the other day & SHE feels the same way: i.e. it's just not a venue for any meaningful dialogue "I just had Orange Juice & Pancakes for Breakfast"etc, etc!!!

My thoughts exactly. Thank you people!!!! Its amazing how crazy and wild people think they are just because they take pictures of themselves every weekend they get drunk. I did delete my account at one point because the status updates were making me MAD - showing peoples deep insincerity and shallowness. Which I admit might not be the normal but response but I find myself getting more and more that way. Or perhaps people are becoming more and more empty?

I couldn't agree with you more. Narcissist's playground is the perfect way to describe it. I have a page but I don't use it to much. It's full of shallow and fake people too. I want to tell some people to get over themselves!
