In any relationship intimacy is important. I mean if you can't be open within a relationship what good is it? That being said sex I don't find as important. You can have sex, but no intimacy, no openness. Sex is something I would only do with very close people and even then I probably wouldn't want it I would do it out of obligation, or out if love to meet there personal need and wishes. But I don't that sex is that important in relationship, because you don't need sex to love someone and you don't need intimacy to have sex.
