Seriously, this annoys me to no end.
Numerous studies have not only shown the benefits of marijuana, but have disputed the "harmful" claims that the anti drug propagandists lie about. I challenge anyone to prove, with real facts, that marijuana is somehow more dangerous than tobacco or alcohol. It can't be done! How many people die each year of tobacco or alcohol related illness? Contrast that to how many people die from weed. Yeah, not even in the same universe.
It's a PLANT. It is natural. It makes people happy (even me, which is hard to do). It relieves pain. Shouldn't law enforcement have a better use for their time than arresting people for possession of a few plant cuttings? There are murderers, rapists, and pedophiles on the loose...but the person with pot is the real threat.
Think of how much money in tax revenue the government could collect if marijuana was available in retail stores. In case you haven't noticed, our economy is pretty crappy right now. Millions of dollars that the government never gets their greedy hands on could be theirs for the taking. I doubt that drug dealers report their profits on their 1040s.
Finally, we are suppoesdly guaranteed the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Right now, two of these conditions are being violated. As long as we are not harming other people, we should be free to choose what we put into our bodies.
I would love to see the US decriminalize marijuana use sometime in my life. We now see Prohibition as a massive and completely stupid failure. My hope is that soon, we will also look back on the illegaility of marijuana with the same viewpoint.
