you can easily spot these kids as adults...they grew up with everything they ever wanted - they've never had it hard and never suffered...they have no compassion and they look down on the underprivileged

I was a nanny so I know the kids you're talking about. Everyone sees them, they're the rude ones who run circles around their ultra permissive parents. It's painful to watch. I do think it's a case of a cultural shift that is beginning to run it's course. For years there was so much parenting advice that stressed building your child's self-esteem that it became the fashion to just let the kids run the show so you wouldn't damage them. I worked for a mom who wanted to raise her kids in a positive way and specifically didn't want to use the word no. She had to rethink that once the toddler years hit, for sure!! I also think it's an overcorrection from the days of heavy corporal punishment. I don't believe in spanking, especially because it was done in an abusive way to me as a child.

But limits are really important. It is possible to raise kids with manners and respect if you are fair, consistant, and firm with your consequences. I am doing my best and hope to god my kids turn out okay. I also have compassion for the moms who can't say no. After all, they usually don't know what they're doing wrong and they are the ones who live with the little monsters.
