High School...

Not enough parents get involved at school when their child reaches high school. Kids spend more time at school with their teachers and classmates than they do parents and siblings at home. All parents should be working together with the school for the benefit of their children.

More parents need to be involved with their child's homework. When a child reaches the age of 14 and beyond, parents seem to think they're old enough to be responsible and do their homework. They need to think again. Most kids that age have to be pushed. Every one of my students that are making below average grades or failing are doing so because of missing assignments.

More parents need to ensure that their child is in attendance when at all possible. I know kids get sick and have to stay home. I also know that some kids, especially high school kids, are experts at convincing mom and dad they're not feeling well and they need to stay home.

Some parents don't even look at their child's progress reports and report cards. This saddens me.

There are great, supportive parents out there as well and I'm thankful for them. Their children are fortunate.
