There may be some part of us that needs to identify friend from foe, and being distrustful of people who are different from us maybe an easy, yet inaccurate way of making this distinction. You can no longer tell if someone means you harm by his skin color than you can by a person's shoe size.  Which comes to the point that we are no longer tribes of hunter gatherers on the African plans. Unfortunately, our social evolution lags behind everything else.
