I had a 9am appointment this morning and was up and ready. First they checked both arms to make sure they could find two good veins.
Oh wait, in case you aren't familiar with the procedure "Apheresis", it's when you only donate platelets, blood cells used to control bleeding. You would have to donate blood six times for them to get enough platelets for one transfusion however, if you go in to just donate the platelets they take it from one arm, run it through a machine to separate the platelets and put what they don't need back in through the other arm. It takes from 1 1/2 to 2 hours but it can help so many.
So back to the donation... it was a no go. Veins were in check but iron wouldn't even register. They told me to wait an entire month before returning to let my red cell count come up. I tried... kinda frustrated, it happens.
Here's someone during the procedure (no idea who he is)
