Can An Individual Make a Difference?

A personal story in the experience: I Try Not to Harm Our Environment
S ome extraordinary people can. They are personable and inspiring, and can influence others to follow their lead. I'm not one of them. I just do my part; I waste very little food, I don't generate much garbage at all (about one bag every 2 weeks), I recycle all that I can, I don't drive, and I am a vegetarian. I don't think I will actually make a difference in the grand scheme of things, but at least my conscience is satisfied.

Think I am making a difference? In my town, businesses are charged for recycling pickup. Guess how many recycle? The small store that I work at generates between 8-12 large bags of garbage a week. Inside those bags are cut-up cardboard boxes, pounds upon pounds of newspapers, plastic bottles, wrappings, and bags, and any other recyclable materials you can imagine. Think about 100 stores doing that, and 1000 more. Despite seeing this insane practice carried out alllllll the time, I still need to feel that I am not directly a part of the global crisis that will mean the end of western affluence.

Are we an adaptable species? Ooooh yes, we are, but we as a species have never experienced the kind of rapid and substantial changes we have gone through in the past 100 years. I think humans will populate the earth for centuries to come, but the number of us and our quality of life will be very different. The rich and powerful will probably still be okay, though.

I'll stop ranting.. but it feels good to rant..

You really need to write for a more public forum. I've said it before, but I think people would take you more serious than others. Your not preachy like me, lol. People like us can change the world, If we support eachother.

You don't think I'm preachy? :)
I really hope we can change the world somehow, but there's too much terrible **** going on all at the same time. I don't know what to do!

LOL, just listen to your heart. If you make it a constant effort to try and help people to understand the world around them, you will find a greater sense of purpose in life. You can do this - on some levels you already do. The reason I think you'll be good at it is that you have a very real personality. Just start a discussion like the one you did on religion "throwing rocks at a hornets nest", only be more universal. LOL, and try not to offend people too! I know it's inevitable, but instead of throwing rocks at the hornets, try and help them find what they're looking for. If you do decide to make a serious effort to write about important issues, I would really like to hear what you have to say. The trick is to find a balance between humility, and being self righteous - that's where I am. Also, I know this sounds tacky, but I think we should form a group of people that share the same goal. Let me know what you want to do.

I've found that a lot of people don't want to understand the world around them (for what it objectively truly is) for several reasons (religion being one of many).

If you want to see the most balanced views on bipartisan subjects, you should read Weretree and CrippleCrow. They demonstrate quality and restraint that I have difficulty in achieving.

I am still quite the reactionary when it comes to bullshit :)

LOL, I will, thank you - but that doesn't get you off the hook fallacies! Who you are, and how you present yourself, will eventually become one and the same if you allow it. I mean that in the most positive way too. I'll be waiting for your next hypothesis on the human condition (LOL). Even if it's just reactionary bullshit! :) Cya later!

Thanks, yeah I've been a little busy just getting to know people and trying to help people along the way. I will have some new material very soon though. Thanks again, talk to you later.
