I Didn't Want to Be Geeky

One time I was watching TV, and my dad came in and asked what I was watching. I was watching that Disney movie Dinosaur, but I couldn't bring myself to say "dinosaur". It was something about that word -- I knew a lot of geeky and autistic guys were fascinated with dinosaurs, and I did not want to have anything to do with those people -- and the fact that it was a Disney movie (when I was just a bit too old for that stuff) didn't help.

So I just sat there, my mouth opening and closing, and Dad got angry that I was wasting his time. He barked that same question at me louder and louder and I just sat there, partly ashamed at myself and partly hoping he would leave. Finally Mom came in, got the TV guide, and read it off for him. At that moment, to use an old cliche, I wanted the earth to open up and swallow me.
