I Used to Get the Cane At School
This is not so much about me, but about my cousin Tony, who is just a couple of months older.
My cousin Tony attended a boys' secondary modern school that had a reputation for being quite tough. When boys were caned it was often the full six strokes. He got his first six within about three weeks of starting for fighting in the playground.
The ritual was almost always the same. Boys to be caned were summoned to the Head's office where they were made to wait facing the wall, hands on heads.
After being summoned inside, either individually or in a small group, boys were given the usual lecture. The head would then ostentatiously select a cane, flexing and swishing it to demonstrate its pliability, before the (first) miscreant was ordered to touch his toes. The Head insisted that this instruction was carried out to the letter, and no stroke was delivered until a boy was in the prescribed position.
The Head would fold up the tail of the lad's jacket, check for any padding or contents of back pockets, which had to be removed, and then announce the number of strokes. He would then lay on each one - hard.
During the caning boys would of course jump up from their touching-toes position. When this happened, the Head waited for him to resume the position before proceeding. This, of course, only served to draw out the beating and to delay any relief. If a boy seemed to be finding it impossible to stay down the Head would make the thoughtful offer of, 'Perhaps you would prefer us to try again tomorrow?', an offer which most of course refused, preferring to steel themselves for the painful ordeal and to get it over with.
During the course of the punishment, the Head would address the bending lad with such comments as, 'I hope you're learning your lesson boy,' and, 'Perhaps you'll think twice in future before...' and the like.
When he was eventually allowed up, the punished boy was required to thank (!) the Head and to remain, facing the wall, hands on head for a further 10 minutes. This was, of course, with a blazing backside desperate for a soothing rub.
Tony told me that one trick used to soothe the pain after a whacking was to sit on the toilet and flush it. The spray of water thus created would have an immediate, if short-lived, cooling effect.
Tony was always willing to show me any marks left on his backside after a caning. I mostly saw him at weekends, and one Saturday we went for a swim at the local baths. There we bumped into a couple of lads from his school, one of whom sported, as did Tony, marks on his backside from a caning he had received the previous day.
