Parents Encouraged Me to Hitchhike

This was about 25 years ago now. I guess in those days it was relatively safe. We had moved from the city into a rural area. My mother doesn't drive and dad was not really keen on driving us anywhere. We had to walk 20 mins to the main road where the bus to town came by.

And so our parents encouraged us to hitchhike. I would have been 13-14 years old. My sister was 2 years older than me. We started off just trying to hitch a ride by standing at the bus stop while waiting for the bus. If we got a ride before the bus came, this would save us our bus fare. The bus only came a few times a day. Sometimes we would just hitch without waiting for the bus. We'd start walking towards town (about 25-30 mins drive from the main road) with our thumb out, and sooner or later somebody would stop and pick us up.

I once missed the bus home from school and decided to hitch a ride home, in my school uniform! I was scared that a teacher would see me and I'd get told off.

I don't know how parents can encourage their teenage daughters to hitchhike. Even back then it wasn't entirely safe.

My parents did not encourage hitch hiking, yet my sister never listened until a man took her to a dirt road and pulled a knife on her. She was 16. If not for what we where taught she would have died or worse, she got away.<br />
