Not Sure If I Should Get One...

I'd like to have a cat, but I'm not sure I could handle it. Having grown up with an allergy to cats (which as far as I can tell has grown away) I never had any pets as a kid. (And having other allergics in my family, a cat would make it hard for them to come and visit :/ )
And as I've never had any pets, I don't know if I could take care of a cat, how much work it is, how to prevent it from chewing on a power cord, getting it to use the litterbox and not any other place, and such things. I've thought about dogs, but a far as I can tell they need even more. (A cat can be a "in house pet" (but IMO it should get out at least a few times a week), a dog must get out and exercise every day; a cat (once grown up) knows the litterbox, a dog has to do it outside).
Maybe I'm just making a hen out of a feather, or maybe it's even more work than I realize?
