What Is It?

The question was

"Why do we call a building a building,  instead of a built?"

While a new building is being put up, I can see why it might be called a building, but, once it is built, shouldn't it be called a built, instead of a building? Yes, it would take a while for people to get used to the sound of it, but it makes more sense, don't you think?

I actually think it should be called an erection, but when I made this suggestion to my granddaughter, she choked on her coffee.
