My study's lined with bookshelves and the number of volumes must be over a thousand, easily. It's hard to get me to lend any of them though, and if I do, I write it down and make sure I don't forget. As I say, I have an unhealthy attachment to my books (and DVDs)!

I find that to be quite healthy. :)

That's very encouraging. Thank you. You'll understand if I refuse to lend you a copy you might want to borrow ;-)

Just always remember to read and love them not just house or collect them.

Oh yeah, I have bent and bowed quite a few shelves in my time. :)

I used to have the problem where my book shelves would literally start bending and breaking from the pressure of me having put so many books in there.

I am like you, my books are akin to my children ( if i had any !). I hate giving them out. I rarely do.

I have since purchased a cupboard for them, but that is on its way to being nearly filled up. I have recently found a couple of new means to aquiring books, used and new. So i have been adding to my collection substantially but ot means i will need more space soon !

I love that my collection is growing but i always need more space !!

I often spend great deals of time in libraries as well. They are one of my favorite places on earth. There is nothing like being surrounded by that kind of history, knowledge, faith and discovery and having it be at your fingertips, literally.

Always nice to meet another book lover, bodryn. :)

I never had enough books or enough space to have a really nice library of my own, but I did take a Masters in Library Science and in that way discovered how I could not only have great access to all the books I'd ever want, but I came to realize that my favorite place to be was a public or university library with comfortable furniture. I have practically lived in libraries. After Barnes & Noble came along, I spent many happy hours there, too. And ended up spending hundreds of dollars on books there, too. Now I have access to the biggest library ever: the internet, and access to Gutenberg books, where you can download most any old classic book you might want onto your computer, and read at your leisure.

Sounds like a plan to me, Aether...if you don't mind my puppies keeping you warm and cozy. :)

We rent a home in Arkansas from time to time for a trip that some of my family takes....one of my favorite parts is the library in that home, I could stay in there for weeks and never get bored. It is magnificent!

I had loaned a book to a friend once about a young girl that had been abused in many different ways...it was one of those books, I knew not to loan because it was so personal but she really wanted to read it and it is a pretty rare book, so I took the leap and loaned it, she was my best friend after all.

She called me a couple of days later and told me that she got half way into the book and realized how evil it was and she burned it because no one should read that.

I think that helped my decision greatly towards not loaning out my books. Yeah, it was evil....but guess what, sunshine....evil things happen and ignoring them doesn't make them go away.

I loaned a friend about 5 of my favorite books, and the next time I went to visit her (mostly to get my books back) she told me she had packed up all the books in the house and given them away! Who does that? Grrrrr! So I know how you feel about them being sacred.

i understand completely what you're talking about. my whole room is filled with books and bookcases and when i'm sad or anything really, i can always turn to them. they are like friends...they really calm me down and relax me. i would like to have a special area for them to with ladders because im really short too. But like you, i wouldn't want them borrowing them either. i would probably miss them too much. lol. its kinda weird i know :)
