Brita Filters Are Recyclable In Europe. Why Not the Us.?

A personal story in the experience: I Want Clorox to Recycle Brita Water Filters
S o many people people are giving up bottled water to protect the environment and switching to filtered tap water.  Yet the filters themselves are non-recyclable plastic.

The original Brita Company in Europe has created a take-back recycling program.  Customers return their used cartridges to collection bins in the stores where they bought them.  The filters are then shipped back to Brita's facility, where they are dismantled and all the components recycled/reused.

Here in North America, Brita is owned by Clorox, and Clorox has not provided a way to recycle them.  And they cannot be recycled by community recyclers because of the way they are made.

So I started a group called Take Back The Filter (http://www.takebackthefilter.org) to urge Clorox to do just that.  The campaign includes an online petition, letter writing effort, as well as filter collection.

We already have support and endorsements from various groups, including Sierra Club, Organic Consumers Association, Co-op America, and others.

What’s the big deal about Brita filters? Sure, I’d like to see them recycled. I’d like to see everything get recycled. But they contribute what, probably .000001% to land fills? With all the **** that we throw away, I'm not getting my panties in a bunch over some water filters.

We would rather not bunch up your panties either. But we would like it if you signed the petition at http://www.takebackthefilter.org, which is a relatively painless thing to do. There are over 6,000 people so far who care about this issue enough to sign because they hate throwing away plastic. And several environmental groups.

The issue is not whether Brita filters are a big deal, but whether or not corporations are willing to take responsibility for the waste that they generate. This campaign matters to people who have given up bottled water waste and then find that the plastic filters are not recyclable.

Corporations aren't willing to take responsibility for the wastes they produce, because they are legally obligated to externalize as many costs as possible and deliver the highest possible profit to the share holders without regard for community interests (see Dodge v. Ford Motor Company).

Instead of trying to make the corporation into a friendlier and nicer tyranny, we should just get rid of it altogether.

Thanks for helping make people aware of this issue. Everytime I read an article or hear a news story telling people to drink filtered tap water instead of bottled water, this is the first thing I think of. I liked the water from my Brita pitcher but it now gets filled with tap water without a filter, because I hated throwing out that big chunk of plastic!

Aren't you happy that they are going to be able to be recycled starting Jan. 2009? Yea!
