He who loves a quarrel loves sin; he who builds a high gate invites destruction.
I remember a young man who gave a talk on a retreat. He indicated that the emotional dysfunction that surrounded him in his early years caused him to build a wall around himself, “nothing gets in, nothing gets out.” It made me think about the walls I used to build in my life. I remember building walls around my weaknesses and addictions so that the world would not see them. I became better at maintaining the wall than I did life itself. I began to think the wall was life. It was a path to destruction just as the Proverb says. Thank God for people who saw through this and were able to help bring down the wall.
Today I pray that I may leave my gate open for all to enter. That I may be seen and real to every person. I pray that as people come into my yard that they are able to look beyond the weeds and the imperfections of my house (me), and see one of God’s imperfect people whose sole desire is to love the Lord and just get a little better each day. A better plan than destruction!
