Posted Dec 14th, 2007 at 2:54PM The function of the library continues to evolve, but the institution is not going anywhere anytime soon. Libraries will only disappear if they cease to be relevant. As long as they continue to meet user needs, they will survive. And librarians are still being educated in droves which keeps wages low and jobs scarce.
Posted Oct 25th, 2009 at 3:15AM I am a librarian and unfortunately the field is dying. In the old days an MLS was required - Masters in Library Science. But google and budget cuts pretty much ruined prospects for librarians, you know...like what happened to the typewriter guy when computer came out. Or what happened to all the travel agents since expedia, orbitz, and all those sites. You can work in a library as an assistant...but sadly it's not all it's cracked up to be. Unless you luck out and get a good library with a good staff. But yes, libraries and librarians are totally underrated.
