I Want to Be An Author
Driving her mother home late that night I can't begin to imagine what was going through her head. She was set to go to France that Friday for three months with a host family. Once she returned that September she was going to go to college with her families support. It sounded like a good idea at the time. Following the line her parents had drawn for her to stay on the right path. Who would see anything wrong with that kind of life?
She wanted to get away from it all and escape that life however. Deviate away from that line drawn for her, set down her own path to follow. That line she wanted to draw so badly didn't have a definite shape, destination, or time. All it had in store for her was uncertainty about how the future would play out. The idea that she could end up going no where and waste the chance given to her was terrifying. Why risk losing it all on something that had no grantee or definitive out come?
As she drove through the dark desert that night her mother in the seat beside her talking about the evenings events she surely thought about all of this and so much more. The idea of never being able to escape that life like a book that has fallen behind the others covered by the drive that kept her going each day. Sure she dreamed like many others to get out and escape that life style, live a life with each day bringing experiences. That dream would have been lost and forgotten behind everything in her life if not for someone handing it back to her.
She had recently met a guy just a few years older than herself. Nothing particularly special about him other than the fact he could hold a conversation. She kept saying to herself, "He is like all the others" and that he too would have no place in her life. As the road curved slightly the dotted lines along the faded pavement bleached by the desert sun appeared just like the memories of people she once had in her life. Each one passing by in an instant to be forgotten and never seen or heard from again. She was convinced that once she left for France this guy would forget about her while she was gone. Telling her self he will find someone else because she was nothing special.
This guy had fallen for her hard over the silliest of things. Talking about how every little boring thing she did was interesting to him. From browsing the same sites, having similar taste, doing the same things to pass by the time they had in their lives. He constantly showered her in affection and attention trying his best to start a conversation when she had better things to do. He always had cheesy lines that made her roll her eyes in a sort of passe manner. She didn't have much interest in a guy who would be gone from her life that Friday and they might never speak again.
However she had trouble completely forgetting him even when there where preparations to be done for her trip still. He handed her the book of her dreams back with a smile on his face ready to help her carry it. This guy who she felt like she barely knew offered her so many different things. When he heard about her want to escape he offered her a place to stay no strings attached. Once he found her dream he offered to drop his life in an instant to go with her and follow through with it. She was reluctant and rightly so to be given he was a stranger in her life. How could this stranger who hardly knows her offer to throw away everything he has worked towards until then just to have their dream come true together? She had thought about her dreams on several occasions but always came back to the line drawn for her. Thinking about the future she thought about her opportunity to live her dream after four years of college only to realize there was more to the line. The although loving and caring line drawn for her by her parents was also oppressive and crushing her hopes to do something else with her life.
The guy being absolutely crazy for her offered her a compromise a solution of sorts to both allow her to follow the line drawn out for her and still have an opportunity to at least taste some of the life she dreamed of. Just like the passing headlights of drivers in the other lane he kept reigniting this idea in her mind. That she could follow that line given to her and take a short detour to see if her dream is really what she wants to believe it could be. Despite this and his best efforts she shot it down like all his other proposals to her going back to the lone fact she believed to be true in her life living her dream or not.
Everyone will disappear just like the dividing lines that dot that dark and quite road home that evening.
Or so she thought...
