A Plea to Help Me Believe

know it's there. The goodness, that is. I'm randomly reminded of it. Sometimes though I feel overwhelmed by the badness in people. I find it very hard to see the goodness. I'm using the word people to signify humanity in general. Perhaps I could say humanity, or the general public, or human kind but I want to say people.
People have become calloused to atrocity. People have lost part of what makes them human, compassion. While knowing and believing may be directly connected, I tend to wonder if they are. You see I know people are capable of goodness. I know people have goodness, yet I struggle to believe it. No, I struggle to believe that they exercise this goodness.
I struggle to believe when I witness children starving to death in an affluent country. I struggle to believe when politics destroys families and causes famine. I struggle to believe when atrocious acts of genocide are committed. I struggle to believe when men, women and children are denied basic human rights. I struggle to believe when the earth is being ruined by selfishness and greed. I struggle to believe when people turn their heads and look the other way.
Please don't look the other way. Please notice what is going on. Please be motivated to make a change. Please, I beg you. Please help me to believe in the goodness of people.

 | Posted Apr 8th, 2008 at 12:42AM Diddo. I try to do things to help in my own little way. I belong to several charitable organizations. I support & practice conservation. I am trying to be a better, more understanding person...this is the hardest thing to do. When faced with all that you have listed it is very hard to persevere. |
