Want to Go Back to School At 31

I'm 31 and graduated high school in '95. I did a Bachelor of Arts degree at a good university and came out of it with good grades. I have never really known what it is that I want to do career wise.  My degree was in English Literature, with a minor in Cultural Anthropology and French.  I don't want to be a teacher.  I chose those subjects because they interested me. I like writing but I don't want to be a journalist.

Since I left school I've done the following jobs: a) managed a physiotherapy clinic, b) tried my hand at Inside Sales, c) managed an Inside Sales team, d) managed a team of Software Licensing Specialists, e) managed operations projects, f)managed database operations, and am now back to managing projects. Jobs b through current are all with the same company, where I've come to terms with the fact that I don't enjoy working.  For the last five years I've also worked as an assistant dog trainer at a local obedience school.

I'm seriously considering taking a 2 year college program training to be a Registered Veterinary Technician.  I don't care if I'll never make $100K a year.  I like working with animals, and I like working with people who are animal people.  I'm prepared for the crappy side of it - people who treat their animals like garbage - I've done a lot of volunteer work in animal rescue and I know what to expect and who to engage.

Here are my fears and worries about going back to school:

I'll be older than everyone in the program.  I spend two years studying and then decide I don't like being a Vet Tech.  I won't be able to work much while in school and will have a hard time paying for regular living expenses.  When I finish the program, what if I want to have kids, and it takes me even LONGER to actually start working? What if when I do get to being a Vet Tech, I find it's not enough for me and doesn't challenge me enough?  What will I do if people that are important to me think I've wasted the last 10 years of my life and why didn't I just do this after graduating high school?  What if I don't even get into the program?

Applying today, I think.  Sigh.
