“It's being here now that's important. There's no past and there's no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can't relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don't know if there is one.” ― George Harrison

There’s that time in every person’s life where they think of the future. They think of where they’ll be, what they’ll be doing, who they’ll be with and if they’re going to be happy wherever they end up. But to be honest, no one knows, unless someone has a time machine (which I doubt), there is no definitive way of suggesting someone’s future, no way of telling someone that their life is going to go a certain path, we can only hold onto an idea, a thought of what our future can hold. For example, right now I’m in university, like most of my friends, so that gives me a foundation that after university I’ll probably go into/look for a job related to my degree, however I could come out of university and think ‘no I’ll keep my weekend job for now and turn full time’ and end up spending the next 6 years there not even realising that my degree hasn’t even been used yet. Not saying that’s going to be the case, but that idea is only a mind-set I have, it’s not fact.

You shouldn't be scared of something you can control

Let me just get side-tracked here for a moment – I think the main thing that people don’t like or are wary of is the fact that they know time is going fast, but they’re scared of being unhappy. I mean you wouldn’t think or even care for the future if you knew you were going to live a successful happy life would you? It’s that idea that as soon as a phase of our life is slowly fading away, the new phase becomes a hurdle that we’re too short to jump over. But you shouldn’t be scared of something you can control. Let me just reiterate that if you missed it….you shouldn’t be scared of something you can control! YOU CAN JUMP OVER THAT HURDLE WITH EASE…. You can change things, plan things, make things, go places and see people – your life is not a movie, it is not scripted.

This brings me onto something else – happiness. Mate be happy in the life you have, so cliché but some people don’t have what you have. I saw a quote the other day and it went something like “your life could be better; however it could also be worse”. I mean c’mon, look what you have right now; your mother didn’t ruin her body for 9 months for you not to be happy.

Realistically and generically life is what you make it, it can be good, bad or both. It can hold so many emotions that eventually some of us are at breaking point however it can reward us with so many opportunities as well. Life is a wonder, it’s something which we can control, we all have a purpose and even though we don’t know what it is or how it may be fulfilled, it’s something that makes us unique. Each and every one of us are innate with a unique gift that no one else can learn or inherit. It’s what makes you, you. Just think that some of you are the sole reason for someone’s happiness because you are you, some of you are the motivation for someone else’s life because you are you, some of are you are the people that bring out the confidence in another because you are you etc. What I’m trying to get at is that we are sometimes blind to what is right in front of us, what is the point in squinting trying to see what is going to happen in the distant future when we can barely look at the things that happen right in front of us. Live in the moment.

You don’t know what life is going to be like tomorrow; you might be happy, sad, angry, depressed or just have mood swings. Our minds are dangerous, we underestimate how powerful it is, how much it makes us think, how strongly it makes us feel about certain situations. However our mind is also our downfall sometimes, where it puts imaginary ideas into our head to the point where we start to believe in our own transparent thoughts. Then that’s what brings the fear of the future into our hearts. The fear derives from you not living with life but living with your mind. You’re thinking about what’s going to happen tomorrow, next week, or in the next couple years, so your fear is about the non-existent …..sounds a bit insane doesn’t it? When you think this way you suffer, not extreme suffering, but suffering nonetheless. You’re thinking about what happened yesterday or what may happen tomorrow because you are rooted to your mind instead of reality. Let’s be honest, our minds is sort of like one part memory and one part imagination, in a sense both parts can be imagination because both halves don’t exist right now, so you’re lost in your imagination and that’s the basis of your fear. Don’t try and predict the future, see what kind of future you want to create and be successful by using your full potential.

Another factor is what profession we’re going to go into when we reach that proper adult stage of life. Most people I know are as confused as to what they want to be or do when they come out of university, and it’s scary because we don’t want to think that we’ve wasted our time at university working hard to achieve something we don’t eventually use. But we have to think in a way that we came to university because were interested in one main topic, one main art form of interest that makes our mind go crazy inhaling all types of knowledge and perception. We go through life picking up different skills and accomplishments that accumulate overtime meaning that we shouldn’t underestimate our own capabilities.
Our life is set to the pace we want it to be set at, if we want to pick up the pace then do it, if you aren’t ready for a few things then make time and slow the pace right down. It links in with making people proud as well; I mean we want a job that makes our parents proud, friends proud and mostly ourselves proud as well. However, we shouldn’t let the acceptance of others influence our behaviour or choices. It doesn’t matter if you don’t become a doctor straight away or a lawyer or a banker…what matters is being comfortable within your own mind and lifestyle and being happy in your own eyes, that is success isn’t it?

Our life isn’t one big race, it isn’t a competition, it’s a goal. A goal that only we set the directions to. Don’t worry about the future, focus on the now. If you care too much about where your life is heading, you might miss the turn signal which leads you down the right route. Take your life as it comes, enjoy the happiness, overcome the sadness and most of all embrace reality.

True life is not a race the first one to the checkered flag is not the winner. It is more about how well you run your race.

Exactly that...we're all in such a rush to get somewhere first that we often miss the thrill of the ride
