It's a Toss Up ...

I realized today after reviewing a couple of my stories that we are now capable of deleting comments on our own stories.

I'm sure this was a request, however, this 'Project' is about "EXPERIENCE" rather than being selective. And while I'm sure there are disagreeable types out there needing to recall what their mother told them, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" who may write disagreeable, rude or even derogatory comments ... I believe comments need to be of record unless they are of a sexually inappropriate nature, lude, etc. There are several reasons for this.

The first being that the commentor would have to either learn something from what they themselves said and decide to delete their own comment or stand by it. It's all about experience and if someone disagrees with me and I have the option to simply wipe out their argument, that's not a very mature process. It ends the possibility of growth through that new concept being represented.

It also poses the threat of slowing the exchange process. I personally will be less likely to comment on stories I find different from my own views simply because I don't care to be deleted at the power of the author. I want my comments to be out there. I want to be the only one who can retract them. The reason? There's something to be said for learning from your own mistakes as well as standing up for what you believe in ...

I dunno ... *shrugs* ... perhaps I'm wrong on this one. It just doesn't seem like the best option considering we already have the option of banning/blocking someone from our posts and profiles should we find their form of interaction disagreeable.

This feature is good, if only for the ability to delete double or triple posts from other people...which I've had to do a few times today.
No biggy, read the message and tidy it up. If not for this feature...who know's what I'd do (Probably ignore it).

Which is what I tend to do, but then again I’ve had at least two times where someone I had significant exchanges with vanished and left me talking to myself…
Did I ever fix that? I’ll have to go look.
Those that do use this, and those that are fingered as doing so, will naturally be less likely to receive big comments or interactions. Let them be stubborn if they don’t want to face the music, you just won’t play any more songs for them.

EP, please accept my apologies for being so adament. It seems I'm being affected by this very topic on a couple of my own stories and thus I reacted negatively.

It could be viewed that if there are two members with opposing stances - which there will be; rather than 1 writing a story and the other commenting on it and having comments deleted *hypothetically* why not write your own opposing view story? It seems only logical to do so.

As always I wish EP and it's members well with their endeavors.

constant, as always you make great points... what can I say-- we'll keep an eye on it. Please continue to let us know your thoughts on this, but at the moment we're OK with letting this bear out.

I agree with fadingsparkles that the incentive to remove comments is not really there-- the author must read the comment in the first place before they delete it, so they're either conducive to what it says or not. Leaving it there won't change their mind or force them to respond to it.

But, as with every feature here, we release and test... so this is the test phase. We really appreciate your thoughts and will continue to keep an eye on this.

EP, I apologize. My clarification was to Veewhy who stated he appreciated being able to delete his own comment from the story of his significant other. This is where I felt the mix up was and was the reason I felt it necessary to clarify.

Like Veewhy, I too appreciate being able to delete comments that I wrote and posted to other member's stories. That particular function was not what I was referring to although I can understand how the wires were crossed.

And while the story is yours and will always remain yours, the member comments are not. I feel when I post a story that it is MINE. When members comment on MY story it does not threaten my ownership of the story I posted. I further feel the comment posting member is the owner of the comment rather than the author of the story they commented on being owner of their comment. I don't believe ownership of a comment on a story takes away from nor adds to ownership of the author's story. Ultimately it gives one sided control to someone who wrote a story and posted it knowing full well they would receive comments, tips, advice, opposing views, etc. Deleting comments on your stories not written by yourself could disillusion the entire community as to who believes what and what the Majority are saying. Not to mention the halt of exchange and a possible lesson being denied either party due to unwillingness to be open and understanding.

I suspsect there are going to be a LOT of people out there whose comments are going to be deleted and that they either a) won't realize it or b) they're quite upset the exchange was halted and stricken from record.

I feel so strongly about this for the very reason that I've found some of my closest friends in both real life as well as EP/cyberworld via opposing stances. I'd hate to think people might miss out on a special friendship due to their own close mindedness and unwillingness to consider another's view point. For me it changes a key dynamic at the core of EP ... However, that's just me ... one person.

Hi, I checked with the engineering team and this feature was added in mid-July.

We still think that it's a useful tool to be able to moderate comments on your own stories. You're sharing your story with the community-- and tools that help you feel more ownership over your contributions, are in, our eyes, generally good.

However, we will definitely keep an eye on how the feature is used-- and this type of feedback is incredibly useful. A comment flagging feature-- which is also under development and would allow the removal of offensive comments, might make this feature obsolete...

You've always had the opportunity to delete the comments YOU wrote, yes. Today I have the capacity to delete OTHER PEOPLE'S comments on MY stories ... This is new to me ... I've never seen it on ANY of my stories/comments before.

Let's make clear what we're talking about here as I believe we are getting things mixed up.

I am talking about me going into a story I wrote and being able to delete comments from another member at my will.

I very much appreciate being able to go back and delete comments I posted.

Hi Constant-- we hear you, and you make some interesting points. However, comment deletion is not a new feature, and thus far we've had no problem with it. You've made us sensitive to the other perspective though, and we'll always keep an eye on things. Let us know how you feel about it after a few days.

hahahahah

Front door? Where?!?! What?

I think the fact that I posted hot on the heels of your comment really is just the perfect illustration of your point about my usage habits!
hahahahaha

I like that the 'delete comment' option returns full ownership of the story to the author. It is nice for people to have that control over it. I doubt that too many people will delete comments, but if they do, it will be most likely because they are not ready to deal with what the comment contained. I think that's ok, too. The EP is not meant to be from the School of The Real World.

This possibility may encourage more people to write stories to express their views rather than writing essays in people's comments (like I do ;)).

My vote would be for keeping the comment deletion feature, unless it becomes a widespread source of problems.

If that were the case, no one would see that persons comment since it would in effect be *private* and no one could reply/respond to that comment. Then the commentor has the potential to learn zero from the exchange because the exchange was eliminated...

Perhaps the best option is to have an automatic deletion of all comments on our stories from those we choose to 'block' ...

And if there are perverts and stalkers out there who are going around commenting in lude fashion or what have you, they need to be flagged so EP can deal with them accordingly. Perhaps there should be the option to "flag" comments as well and allow EP to moderate it?
