Thumbs Up Only!!!!

I wish EP would remove the thumbs down feature for comments.  Since this was added back to the features available on stories I have noticed ripples throughout the EP community of persons “thumbing down” a lot of people’s comments and it saddens me to think that we are not adult enough as a group to be given this privilege without a few abusing it.  It would be a great place if we could all play in the same sandbox and not attempt to get to others by flagging their comments negatively.  EP is a place of support and not a place of negativity.  I feel the only way to get past this happening is to remove the option of “thumbing down” a comment and only allowing for positive nods.  What are your thoughts?  I am not sure this is the most popular option but include your opinions here as well so that EP support can know what we are thinking as a whole.  I promise I want personally negatively flag your comment so feel free if you have a differing opinion on this to express it especially if you have a better idea to solve the problem.

Thanks y'all again for your comments. I gave you all thumbs up for having courage to express your views here whether they oppose my view or not. I would never click the negative face on a post unless the comment was offensive. <br />
<br />
I do think it is a good thing to know, however that the negative nods are tracked by EP but I feel stupid that I hit the wrong smiley on MT's. I wish there was a way to fix it if you click the wrong one too lol.

I have given the frown/thumbs down very very FEW times.<br />
I do occasionally give the thumbs up though.<br />
<br />
I give you the thumbs up FunGirl. : )

if i put a thumbs down its not that i don't like the subject more that i don't agree with it or find it offensive. Hence my decision to use the thumbs down option!. I am relatively new here but once again i am asking if i am missing the point. Could someone please verify to me when it is 'acceptable' to use the thumbs down...

"i dont know if i am missing the point here but some days i actually feel negative, but then i do suffer from depression, but if i want to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down then i will, the reason i will is because i can. if you give someone an option they will take one of the options, you cant then say oh dont use option (b) unless this or that applies. at the end of the day its the content of the subject thats important surely not the amount of negative or positive votes it gets. If there is a comment here that i feel grates against my soul i will leave a thumbs down, after all thats what they are there for. Im only being honest. ummm thats a smiley or sad face now by the looks of it!..i preferred the thumbs"<br />
<br />
i think the point people are tying to make is ep never should have put the option there <br />
<br />
and ep sorry but please get a clue people are thumbs dowining things just because they don't like the relevent point being made removing it from the viewing area and making it harder for those who read stories and comments to make sense of what is said <br />
<br />
Ep you just made a bigger mess for yourself by putting it there

I agree with the previous 2 posts from newhippy and freespirit.<br />
Also: I signed-up to a site with nod-able comments. I agreed therefore to allow people to express their feelings about my comments.<br />
Some comments do make me smile or or pull a sad face. I will click the sad face if a comment makes me pull a very sad face. I think its just a shame I can't do that when people post answers to my questions in Ask Experience, that personally I find extremely depressing, and somewhat offensive.. though often they aren't personal enough to flag.. such as discrimination against the poor.. it doesn't always have to be overt, but there is a lot of it on the internet, and so too on EP.<br />
Bad comments on my stories, I can delete, but on my questions, I cannot. I have to just pick a best answer before the time runs out. On other people's questions I see offensive 'joke' answers being voted up to the top of serious questions by people who want support.<br />
There are a lot of assumptions made by people.. I think it's wrong assumptions that give me the hump. My last point is that sometimes a comment will come from someone who I am afraid of, because of their habit of making assumptions, and then making wild claims and accusations on other people's stories.. I don't want to call their attention to my profile, in case they make assumptions followed by accusations about me, on other people's stories where I can't delete them.. so if they're attacking another member ((or group of members to get around the rules on personal attacks!)) I can't do anything but express my sadness anonymously.<br />
It is a shame so many hateful people use EP, and make such terrible remarks, and that EP is a place to post impersonal hateful comments and stories.. not so much as other sites, I couldnt stand Fb, it's all about witch-hunts, but I dont feel safe on EP either-far too many hate-groups, where stories are far too extreme in their description of violent INTENT.... Oh, and saying "It's only venting" doesn't help me! I read how these sick people would like to hurt me and it makes me afraid to post my most important stories, afraid to look for support here. <br />
Sometimes I want to just quit EP.. but there's nowhere else, and I have my friends here now.

The thumbs-down/sad face feature is in place to prevent inappropriate or irrelevant posts from being prominently displayed. It's a way for the community to monitor itself. Only .0001% of members have had comment(s) that have been voted down. After reviewing our records we see that the feature is working properly. We have not seen it abused and take abuse of this feature and the flagging feature very seriously.<br />
<br />
Also, if you suspect that a specific member is abusing the feature, you can do two things. First, block the member. This will prevent him or her from having the ability to rank your comments. Next, email EP and let us know. Should we see abuse of the system by any member, we will take immediate action.

i dont know if i am missing the point here but some days i actually feel negative, but then i do suffer from depression, but if i want to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down then i will, the reason i will is because i can. if you give someone an option they will take one of the options, you cant then say oh dont use option (b) unless this or that applies. at the end of the day its the content of the subject thats important surely not the amount of negative or positive votes it gets. No problem, (((LOVE and HUGS)))

Thanks darling! I appreciate you being so good to me.

YOU GAVE ME A NEGATIVE!!!!!! OMG WTH??????<br />
<br />
<br />
;-))))))))))))))<br />
<br />
Come here and give me a hug and it will be all better.<br />
<br />
You don't ever put anybody down FG at least not seriously. <br />
<br />
I don't really know what the rating thing is to accomplish anyway when you words mean so much more to me than a rate.

June, Bravo. I couldn't have said it better.

I agree, fungirlmmm. I always thought of EP as a positive place, the biggest group hug online (I wish I remembered who said it first!)<br />
<br />
Was surprised when the thumbs down button showed up but I thought, well, let's see. And yeah, after a while I came to think that it's just not good. You know, beforehand when we felt like there was something unacceptable we thought about reporting it.<br />
<br />
And then we'd take some time thinking about it and make decision(s). But this thumbs down thing makes everything too instant and thoughtless. I'm worried that it'll encourage mean harshness.

I ain't touching that thumbs up because my mouse is messed up so I won't be posting thumbs until after I reboot. I would give you a nod Flour if I wasn't afraid I would 0 you too.

i agree with you. i dont like the negativety!

Oh shoot MT! I went to give you an up yours happy nod and I clicked on the wrong one. it won't let me give you an up now. It was me that hit the button but I didn't mean to hit the negative, but the positive. I am so sorry. Crap! You can negative me back. :-(

In reading others posts if I find one that takes the word right out of my mouth, I would like to give it a nod, if the thumbs or the smiley things are to do that then like FG said have the down one removed, or if the rating system is removed then leave a comment applauding the comment that you liked.<br />
<br />
For the angry posts, people can be immature and unfortunately that is more often than not, they react out of reflex to whatever it is, as opposed to think it out and not be fully emotional in their response. It is possible to express your view in a non-aggressive conversation where feelings are spared but the point still comes across.<br />
<br />
These are my thoughts on this.

Speaking of the attack posts DB, how do you think we could stop those? I have been thinking about this a lot lately and it causes me some concern when I see those attacks. I don't like it whether my friends are involved or not. i just can't think of a suggestion to stop it without being worried about censorship. <br />
<br />
MB, good point. I wasn't sure how to word the smiley face thingee lol<br />
<br />
SS and Tulick good points as well. <br />
<br />
Thanks to you all for your comments. Let's see what others think, especially EP support. thanks again y'all.

I don't care why they put it here but they should have had sense enough to NEVER have put it here they just create more mess for themselves and make people want to leave or leave

I think this was put in place as a responce to someone suggesting being able to flag comments that attacked someone, I could be wrong. Either way, I think it missed the point, I agree, we should be supportive here, if you don't like something, don't read it. I will admit that I have used this feature, but only on comments that were in fact attacking the author and/or the story or other users on the comments section of the story.
