When I was a child living in California, the homes in the neighborhoods all had alleys.
My younger sister and I would love to ride our bikes up and down the unpaved alley. Oh, the adventure of hitting or swerving around potholes, dodging rocks or seeing how close we could ride by a parked car in the alley.
However....At one end of the alley, there was a very very busy street. My sister and I would pedal as fast as we could down the unpaved alley on our bikes. As we approached the very busy street, we would do a sharp left angle turn onto the sidewalk and continue on with our bike riding down the sidewalk!
WELL....TALK ABOUT STUPID! What kid in their right mind would be pedaling at top speed down an unpaved gravel alley and swerve onto a paved sidewalk to avoid getting in the street and being hit by a car!!
There were a few close calls to avoid being hit by cars....But, my sister and I continued on with our dangerous joy riding, until we moved to Oregon!!
