Opting Out Seems Like The Sane Thing To Do

The modern world is full of a lot of stress and unnecessary burdens. When you look at a control group to our grand 21st century sociological experiment, the Amish, you see that they don't have nearly as many ulcers or panic attacks or diseases as the modern "civilized" person does.

Zen monks operate in much the same manner. I used to joke with my friends, "Yeah its easy to be a peaceful zen monk when you live in a monastery in the forest! Try being peaceful working at a customer complaint call center for $9/hr while trying to pay off three credit cards!"

To which the zen monks would undoubtedly reply, "You're right. That's exactly why we choose not to live that way."
