I Want to Play Fungirl's Definition Game.

I love to play word games and the more I can learn as I play the more I enjoy them. I am calling on all you wordsmiths now to play with me.

How do we play?

Using an American Heritage Dictionary I will provide an original definition however will not provide the word that it defines. The next person to answer the post will give us the word that is defined and will provide the players with a new definition and we will play until we all get stumped and can’t name the defined word. If we are unable to provide the word within 48 hours the poster will come back and provide the word and a new definition. Hopefully we can all learn some new words and build our vocabulary playing this game.

Example of Game Play:

1. A word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or other words in a language.

2. A word or an expression that serves as a figurative or symbolic substitute for another.

3. Biology A scientific name of an organism or of a taxonomic group that has been superseded by another name at the same rank.

Answer: Synonym

Then the person who answers correctly would provide the next definition in their post.

Our First Definition:

-One of two or more words corresponding in meaning but of different languages.

future? I am guessing at the definition that is destiny?

ok let me think..... It could be "fate."

Noper! They have to figure it out without it. If they don't get it right off after a couple of days we ask for another clue. and so on until we get the word or the time has expired... generally we will play a word no longer than a week.

Yes we just got stalemated...do you want to come up with the next definition? make it hard one so it takes us forever to figure out.

the blackouts stuffed me up last night.... but yeah its a bit confusing if you are not on line often

It is ok zenandi.... I will moderate if you aren't here and pick a person that is on at that time to give us a new definintion and then you can join in when you can... I am learning from this... So anyone that wants to play and can't be on everyday just know that we will play with me moderating and if the answer we accept is not the word you had in mind we will put the definition back in play once the current one is answered.

The word was serendipity, FG, just as you guess. Guess that one was a little too easy... It would also seem that I wait to long to log into between playing...

I want to play. Since it's November now, and (fg) did not declare that someone got the answer right, does that mean that it is still open? If not (polyamory looks right to me), then how about this one:

noun. the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way

Go ahead and post one if you guess and the previous poster will give us the right answer.. others can guess too if they think it is wrong.

How will we know whether to propose another definition? The word we supply may not be the correct one.
