Leo Tolstoy

I've started reading Anna Karenina. This book so far reminds me of today someway ....

A man who is married to a woman who has bore him 7 children (2 died) and she just discovered he has a mistress.

Needless to say the wife is taken aback -- and he is remorseful, but really thought she would not mind.

I've just started the book, so I have not even met any of the MAIN main characters, but I want to do this ... I want to finish reading everything Tolstoy has written.

So far- I am intrigued.

I think it is timeless. Though the words and the setting and the culture may be different from ours today, the meat of the story, the meaning and all of the work the author put into elucidating the meaning (in a way in which the reader is guided, but finds the meaning on his/her own), is what makes it so timeless.

sattellite....could that be the reason why i have such poor tv reception, i was just about to go buy a new roll of tin foil and get a bigger hanger. but if it won't do any good because the sattellite is jamming my signal, I'm f***** !! (there you can count these asterik's)

It's so funny ... I just recently looked Machiavelli... I had no idea who he was :) You have GOT to get off my wavelength :)

i wrote about Maciavelli saying that a long time ago.

you are oh so correct mb.

Thanks - I'll keep those in mind :)
I too can see such similarity in the writings that could fit in to today's culture. I know as humans, we always want to think that everything we do is unique, our experiences, our problems. But somewhere, in another place, another time, everyone has been through the same thing. It's just a repeat ... :)

Having read a lot of Russian literature I can attest to how modern much of the late 19th century material can be. Take away the carriages and you have situations familiar to us today. Check out The Golovlyov Family by Saltykov-Shchedrin. Or Fathers and Sons by Turgenev.

When you have a chance -- a big long chance -- read War and Peace. Tolstoy has a rare gift for painting the vast tapestry that is the human experience.

Oh CarbonHeart -it is a GREAT book!!! Well, I am adding this to one of my favs. My absolute fav is Wuthering Heights, and Pride and Prejudice, and Jane Austen. *sigh* .... Romance today IS like that (or it can be). You just have to work at it :)

It's weird how there will seem to be a song/book/movie at the right moment in our lives that somewhat reflects what we feel.
Hope it's a good book! I've never read any of their books. Will have to hunt one down now!

Thanks Jophiel :) The more I read, the more I LOVE his writing style.

you have made a wise choice one of the classic Russian writers you will be inspired. Great book, have a good read.
