The Real Uncle Tom

The hero in Harriet Beecher Stowes novel was a run away slave named Joshua Henson.

In 1825 he led a group of runaway slaves from  from Maryland to freedom in Canada.

Generally, history is written by those in control at the time. That's what makes archiology so fasinating.

I used Harriet Beecher Stowes' "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as an example of women's role in the Civil War. I called these examples "Her-Story".



I told my students that history was in fact "HIS-STORY" as written by white middle-upper class MEN. Women and Blacks didn't exist in there view of what was important...DD
