The Most Awkward Thing A Hobo Can Say When Someone Hands Him A Dollar

My mother was walking into the grocery store today and saw a hobo sitting on the curb. She felt bad because she didn't have a dollar bill to give to him so she decided she'd give him one after she gets her change at the store.
She goes in, gets the food, pays and starts making her way outside, a dollar bill already out and ready to give to the hobo. The hobo sees her walking towards him and gets up to walk up to her when finally my mother starts handing him the dollar. His face transform into one of shock, surprise and finally embarrassment as he awkwardly says, "Oh, ma'am. I was just on my break from work!" That guy wasn't a hobo! It was just a worker from the grocery store who was on a break and was taking it outside on the curb! And my mother mistook him for a hobo due to his scraggly appearance and tried to give him money! Can you imagine what he must have been thinking regarding his appearance at this very moment?
In case you're all wondering, my mother let him keep the dollar anyway due to not knowing what the heck else to do now that she basically made it clear to him that she mistook him for a hobo. And I guess he went up to her after he saw her approaching because he thought maybe she had a question or needed help with anything but surprise! She just wanted to give him a dollar!
