Captain Phil Harris Passed Away

I am speechless, bereft. I am so very sad, so full of sorrow. I never got to meet Phil, which was a huge dream of mine. I left a message for him, and this is it, I have nothing more to say.

Dear Phil, I loved you so. You were the man I respected for his hard work and tenacity. You were like the dad I never had. You were like the love I never met, and loved from afar. You were someone I wanted to meet. You were so many more things to so many more people. But to me, you were mine, and I loved you with all my heart. In today's world where media can bring someone you can not know into your living room, I am vulnerable to feeling attached to the people I respect and admire. I loved you from the first time I saw you, and I know if we had met we would have been friends. I wanted to meet you, Phil, and I am sorry I did not. I will think of you and miss you for the rest of my life.

To Jake and Josh, he was really yours, he belonged to you, and I thank you for sharing your father with us. I love you both too, because you were his. (Somehow, he reminded me of my own father that I never knew, whose name was also Phil.) We will still have all the hours of Phil on the show, so we can remember why we loved and respected him.
Goodbye, Phil, I love you...

Here are the messages from his family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. - Jake and Josh Harris

It is with tremendous sadness that I say goodbye to Phil Harris. Phil and I have been business partners and friends for nearly 20 years. We have been through a lot of ups and downs together with the F/V Cornelia Marie. As a skipper, he was a great fisherman. He loved his family and cared for his crew. We will all miss him. - Cornelia Marie Devlin

Statement from Discovery - Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew.

I am still torn apart - I thought he was strong enough to make it through this. I can't handle it! Whah!

Oh that is so sad. I had no idea he was that ill. It's very sad for his boys & the crew,
