I Want to Talk Books
I have been creating my garden for 14 years. I only have a 30 square foot plot to work with so it's quite a challenge to fit in as many of my favourite plants as possible.
The first thing that catches the eye when I roll outside is a black bamboo hedge about 8' wide and 10'-15' high which dominates one end corner. It's rarely so calm that the bamboo doesn't sway and whisper in the breeze. I like to think that it's whispering encouragement to me. My garden is south facing, so the bamboo being at the end casts an almost mystical shadow of whispers in it's corner.
On the right is a rectangular bed containing a golden bamboo a garnet Acer and two small ornamental grasses, all growing through a bed of small white pebbles. This is my japanese'ish bed. It does not excite the eye but instead has a serenity in it's clean simpleness.
Cast your eye a little further up and there is a statue of Aphrodite cast in Portland stone.
A garden is as important for it's fragrance as for it's appearance, I choose many plants for their fragrance alone. Perovskia or russian sage, lavendar, a buddleija, these are just three types the scent of which hangs in the air on still summer days. Lemon balm really does smell of lemon, and the vanilla plants of vanilla but you have to rub the leaves and enjoy the scent on your fingers, but then a garden is a tactile entity so rubbing brushing and stroking all contribute to the overall experience.
My garden is a sanctuary for my mortal soul a place of peace and reflection of beauty and life, and when my broken body finally gives up my soul:-
my garden will be a place of fecund beauty for my soul to dwell in.
