"We were taught generosity to the poor and reverence for the Great Mystery. Religion was the basis of all Indian training."

--Charles A. Eastman (Ohiyesa), SANTEE SIOUX

Every Indian knows and has a feeling inside that, bottom line, our real purpose on earth is to be of service to our fellow man and to be of maximum service to the Great Spirit. The Creator designed the earth to be self supporting - everything is interconnected and all things were created to be of service to each other. The Indian way is to pray about all things. Religion is not separate from any part of our lives. Everything is spiritual and we are to view all matters in this way. Family is spiritual, work is spiritual, helping others is spiritual, our bodies are spiritual, our talk is spiritual, our thoughts are spiritual. We need to practice seeing all things as spiritual.

Great Spirit, today let me help the needy and allow me the wisdom to have respect and reverence for Your teachings.

Nothing can take the place of experience. All people have to do is learn Nature's language, by studying Creations behaviour, and apply what they learn to their own life

Out in the country, I've seen people who watch nature. They know alot about the way the world works without a lot of book knowledge.

Well if you look at other Elders Meditation, you will see that even Indians call their way of life 'religion", but it's not organized in the same way as Christianity, Judaism or Islam may be.

The Indians way of life is teaching their children about GOD, and pray that it is passed down from generation to generation.

GOD teaches that we can take a child to the highest mountain and teach them all they should know, then step back and watch what the child does. Actually this is exactly what GOD does to His students as well. HE teaches us all HE wants us to know, then steps back to see our strengths and challenges.

If you have ever experienced praying outside, you are missing a powerful experience. I miss it,
GOD'S Will for all mankind is to 'obey' Him, and to choose free will to do it with. The Indians do this through Respect for all creation. We learn from all animals, birds, insects bugs, mammals, fish clouds water, sun trees grass snow, etc Everything has a message for us to learn and grow becoming a balanced person, allowing the spirit within us to rise.

Its spirituality...religion is organized...very nice shai for your elightening words. Spirit always guides it never leads me astray.

The Indian way is fascinating. Is there such a thing as religion without "religion". That can be a dirty word these days.
