Day 3 - Happy Songs Are Just Fun

I have no idea why but i love to sing and dance along to this song. I am posting this video, rather than the official video, because i like the dancers/backup singers. What? Anyway, without further ado, I present you with "Cool For Cats" (at at at at ats) by the wonderful Squeeze.

The Indians send signals
From the rocks above the pass
The cowboys take positions
In the bushes and the grass
The squaw is with the Corporal
She is tied against the tree
She doesn't mind the language
It's the beating she don't need
She lets loose all the horses
When the Corporal is asleep
And he wakes to find the fire's dead
And arrows in his hats
And Davy Crockett rides around
And says it's cool for cats
The Sweeney's doing ninety
Cause they've got the word to go
They get a gang of villains
In a shed up at Heathrow
They're counting out the fivers
When the handcuffs lock again
In and out of Wands worth
With the numbers on their names
It's funny how their missus'
Always look the bleeding same
And meanwhile at the station
There's a couple of likely lads
Who swear like how's your father
And they're very cool for cats
They're cool for cats

To change the mood a little
I've been posing down the pub
On seeing my reflection
I'm looking slightly rough
I fancy this, I fancy that
I want to be so flash
I give a little muscle
And I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash
And by the time I'm sober
I've forgotten what I've had
And everybody tells me that it's cool to be a cat
Cool for cats

Shake up at the disco
And I think I've got a pull
I ask her lots of questions
And she hangs on to the wall
I kiss her for the first time
And then I take her home
I'm invited in for coffee
And I give the dog a bone
She likes to go to discos
But she's never on her own
I said I'll see you later
And I give her some old chat
But it's not like that on the TV
When it's cool for cats
It's cool for cats

Yes, Opalgem, that is a prefect desc<x>ription of the song. And thanks for the slang definitions.

Thanks affinityterra, have you never heard Squeeze or just this song? They really are wonderful.

LOL, a "schooldays" song for me. Yes, I think it is comparing the "cool" way of life as portrayed on tv shows/movies vs the reality of life.

Hmm, let's see:

The Sweeney = police/cops

fivers - £5 notes

Wandsworth = is a UK prison

missus = wife, saying "Missus" instead of "Mrs".

likely lads = criminals (not always serious ones)/ thieves/con artists... those blokes in the neighbourhood, that have no money, but always know where and how to get their hands on stuff. They do a deal here, a deal there...

pull = found someone for a one night stand

I think is is about things not turning out how they are supposed to turn out, sort of the failure of fantasy as it were. The Corporal wakes up cold, without his horses or his Squaw. The thugs get thrown in jail when they thought they were untouchable. The bar poser gets too drunk, gets an STD and doesn't remember a thing. The disco guy gets the girl, but it isn't all that it is cracked up to be, he takes her phone number, but never will call her.
It's sort of a depressing song after all, but it is fun to sing along with and the music is uplifting.

Aether, I was glad you posted the lyrics. i had to double check a few times on what was said! Then settle in and decide what was meant!! :)

Squeeze is da bomb! When I was tuning down the Punk Rock, I found Squeeze and fell in love almost instantly.

SQUEEZE!!! I was just talking about this song this past weekend with some friends.

Very fun song. It reminds me of this punk shirt I wore that had zippers everywhere all over it

This was a toss up between Prince's "Let's go Crazy", I opted for this one because i have plans for other prince songs later on my list, I figured i would give squeeze a little love. I am not a linguist, and I have to admit I'm not good at it, but i love the puzzle of the cockney rhymes, there are some wonderful gems in this song.

ADORABLE!! Perky and alive! All that spandex is a little scary but hey, they wear it well!! ;)
