At The Kitchen Table, With Coffee

Stage setting: A shabby kitchen, small, with a table, and a stove and a refrigerator. Two people sit facing each other, in silhouette to us, against the dingy white kitchen window curtains. Their heads are down, looking into their coffee cups.

Man: They'll be here pretty soon.

Woman: What?

Woman: Who? What did you say?

Man: I said, they'll be here pretty soon.

Woman: Who?

Man: Them.

Woman: Them. I don't know what you mean.

Man: Sure you do.

Woman: What are you talking about?

Man: They're coming for you, Elta.

Elta: Coming for me?

Man: Yes, coming for you.

Elta takes a slow sip of her coffee.

Elta: Pari, is this some kind of joke?

Pari: No. I'm not joking.

Elta: Should I leave?

Pari: No, they would find you.

Elta: Why do they want me?

Pari: They want to talk to you?

Elta: What have I done?

Pari: Nothing?

Elta: Then why would they want to talk to me? There's no reason.

Pari: I'm sure they have their reasons.

Elta hangs her head and sits dejected over her coffee.

Silence for around a half a minute.

Elta, looking up: So what am I going to do?

Pari" You're going to see them. You'll answer the door and do whatever they say.

Elta: Hmmm.

She shakes her head.

Elta: What do you think they want?

Pari: Who knows?

Elta: Just how do you know this anyway?

Pari: They came earlier when you were at the market buying the coffee.

Elta: What did they want?

Pari: I don't know, I didn't ask them.

Elta: When did they say they'd be back?

Elta looks up at the clock on the wall.

Pari: They didn't. They just said 'We'll be back.' Then I shut the door.

Elta: Who are 'they'? What did they look like?

Pari sips his coffee for the first time.

Pari: They looked like two agents of the government, Elta. In suits. With IDs.

Elta: IDs. Okay. From which agency?

Pari: I didn't read them. They showed them, I nodded. That's all.

Elta: So did they sound angry?

Pari: Angry? (Laughs) They were cold as ice. Like robots.

Elta: Tel me, honestly. What do you think it is about?

Pari: I don't know, maybe your computer or something?

Elta: There's nothing on my computer.

Pari: I'm just guessing.

Elta: I can't even guess.

She drinks her coffee down.

Elta: I want to run.

Pari: Run? Why!?

Elta: I don't know, I'm scared!

Pari: I don't think that is a good idea.

Elta: So, you say, stay, and see what they want.

She shakes her head again.

Elta: Then it will be too late to run.

Pari: Run to where? Where you gonna go?

Elta: Out. Out of here. Out of this walled city. Back. To the outside.

Pari: There's nothing left out there, Elta, forget it. It's all been destroyed.

They sit in silence for a moment, looking into their coffee cups.

There is a knock at the door.
