Well, don't give up. I'm one of those people who believes Popular Mechanics explanation, but I wouldn't want to live in a world without so called conspiracy theories. Uncle Sam has pulled some real doozies. Human experimentation, foreign political manipulation, etc etc. Someone has to rock the boat! If it turned out that the 9-11 'truthers' were actually right all along, I would probably do something to make the 10 o clock news.
It isn't so much that the truthers are right although many of the points that they commonly make are demonstrably true. There are many flavors of "truther" and they have proposed everything from directed energy beams to holographic images of planes, their purpose being, I think, to trivialize the pursuit of truth. The important point here is that the official version of events is not true, it's full of contradictions, paradoxes, and inconsistencies, and in fact impossible. Unless of course they have repealed the laws of physics. That wouldn't surprise me although I seriously doubt it would make the ten o'clock news.
If conventional wisdomyou can find 25 people who subscribe to what is referred to as conventional wisdom, kudos! We have cynicism, apathy and conspiracy theories,....but maybe thats the new
The vast majority subscribe to the endlessly-repeated "official" version of major events (911, etc., etc.) which becomes the Master Narrative or conventional wisdom, embedded in a matrix of profound ignorance and mystification A significant minority (not significant enough) who have the ability to think critically are skeptical and question things but their skepticism is marginalized by calling them conspiracy theorists. In reality the official versions of events, with just a little scrutiny, turn out to be the most wildly preposterous conspiracy theories ever conceived, without a shred of evidence to support them. So many people become cynical and apathetic because they know they are being lied to but lack the ability to figure out who and why. The average American doesn't do well with complexity. But none of this matters to me because I know that our government always tells the truth.
