Spina Bifida Occulta

I was born with spina bifida occulta, a minor form of spina bifida that hasn't affected my spine much, but my urinary tract.  As a child, I got very frequent infections of the urinary tract and as an adult, I am more susceptible to them than most.

One time, the infection spread to my kidneys, which was a lot more serious.  I had to go into the hospital for several days.

I have a friend who has the more serious form of spina bifida and is confined to a wheelchair.

I am in the United States. I was born with spina bifida occulta in 1960 in a rural hospital. It wasnt discovered for 30 years although Ive struggled constantly! I hid the incontenence for decades. I have not found a doctor that specializes in spina bifida in North Dakota. My story wont fit in this space. I fear, with the negelect from doctors Ive seen, wheelchair next

Hi smoothie

I can relate to the problems you're having with the incontinence. I also have spina bifida occulta. It has never given me problems til now and I'm 63. Following an MRI it was discovered that in relation to the sb I have diastematomyelia with a tethered spinal cord. I will be heading for surgery to untether the cord and hopefully that will resolve the incontinence issue. Have you had that surgery? If so, I'd love to hear from you!

They featured a woman whom had suffered for 16 years with urinary problems and she now

catheterises herself through her belly button. It has completely changed her life for the better.

Maybe you could have that operation too.

I think it was on on Wednesday or Thursday this week ending 6th May 2011

I'm sorry. Is there any cure or at least a way to alleviate the symptoms?
