I Was Hit By a Car
It happened almost one year ago on December 2nd, 2010. It's hard to believe it's been that long since my last steps were taken. I almost didn't survive. I was called a miracle by many of the doctors who have seen me in the last year. I have undergone six surgeries to date. I still can't walk but I'm certain I will walk again, hopefully soon.
My life literally changed in the blink of an eye....
I went to a friend's surprise birthday party. It was a cold December night and I was ready to go home and get my warm jammies on and read for a while before going to bed. It was 8 p.m. and I headed for the door all bundled up for the upcoming cold outside. I was waiting to cross the street and a woman kindly stopped her car and motioned to me to "go ahead" and cross. I thanked her with a quick wave of my hand and stepped out into the street. I don't remember any of what happened next but the accident was on video and here is what I learned of what happened. A gentleman driver was speeding and when he reached the woman who motioned me out, he illegially passed her on the right and hit me. I flew many feet as I am a small person of 5ft, 4in. and weighed about 110 lbs. I suffered several injuries. Someone called my son. My children came to the scene and saw their mom lying on the cold, dark pavement with blood everywhere. Their mother's blood; my blood. I was rushed to the local hospital. My injuries were too extensive. They couldn't help me. I was life-flighted to Strong Memorial. I underwent several surgeries, one being 14 hours long. My pelvis was shattered, my left humerous bone was broken in half, my right hand was crushed and my face was split open from the nose down. My surgery on my pelvis failed so I had an additional surgery just a month ago. It was a success! I still can't walk but hopefully soon I will be able to weight bare and begin intensive PT. My story doesn't end. I could write forever about how this incident changed me. In some ways....for the better; In other ways.....well, I haven't quite figured it all out yet.
