I Was Spanked At School, At Home
5th Grade - Night Session 3
After the 50 swat paddling I had received in November for misbehaving in Church, one would think it would have a long lasting effect on this type or wrong behavior, but it only lasted 4 months. It was now March of 1965 and another one of those boring Sundays. I was sitting in my customary place on the last row along with a sixth grader named Sandi to my left, and four 4th graders to my right, Brenda, Mary (not the same Mary in the previous session), Marcia and Janet.
We had managed to be still through the Sunday school portion, but the sermon was more then we could tolerate. The Priest would read Old Testament passages and then try to show how they are applicable in today's society.
About 15 minutes into the hour discourse Sandi decided to start a game of "Hang-man". Sandi drew up the game sheet and handed it to me and I set about trying to guess the word. Brenda, who was directly to my right, began to help me solve the puzzle.
The other three 4th graders, seeing what we were doing, created their own game and began playing it. Soon the service was over and we went on to play for the remainder of the afternoon. I had just showered and was sitting on my bunk when Caroline, Mr. Montgomery's wife walked in and went over to the 4th grade area and called Brenda's name.
Then she called Mary, Marcia and Janet and told them to wait by the door. Then my name was called, followed by Sandi's and we were told the same thing. After we had gathered by the door she said, "Follow me", and headed out the door and down the hall towards the principals office.
We were whispering among ourselves wondering what we had done now, since no one ever went to the office in the evening except for a paddling. Once inside, he directed Sandi, Janet and me to the chairs along the back wall, and Mary, Marcia and Brenda to the bench located along the left side of the office. His wife went to her office and sat in the usual area.
We knew a paddling was in order because he already had the "spanking" chair in place and the paddle in his right hand. He then started griping at us about playing during the Lords service saying "You know girls, there are two things I love and respect more than anything. #2 is my country, the good ol' U.S. of A., and #1 is the love for our creator and God.
Out of all the hours in a week, we only give him two and I expect those two to be quality ones. That means no talking, no writing, and NO GAMES! What really makes me mad is that I know all of you know this, but you still try to cheat the rules. Well this one will cost you." As he his talking he is tapping the paddle against the palm of his left hand.
He goes on, "Because of the seriousness of this offence you each will receive 30 swats." Immediately Marcia mumbles "30?" to which Mr. Montgomery replied, "Yes 30, and be glad it's not 40! Does anybody want 40?", he asked sarcastically. As I have stated in the previous few stories, I began to discover this weird "enjoyment" I got out of paddling and it was very confusing. I would also watch more intensely at the others while they were on the receiving in and I kind of liked that too.
I also was discovering that a few others in our orphanage also liked it a bit. One of these that I came to suspect was in this group was Sandi because of the way she reacted during the paddling. Another thing about Sandi that caught my eye was that she was very developed for a 12 year old. She had breasts that were almost B-cup size, which I envied because I didn't have squat. Then he pointed at Sandi and said she was first and told her to take off her smock and leave it on the chair she was sitting.
Sandi got up and did what she was told and approached Mr. Montgomery. As the naked girl stood by his side he placed a caring hand on her shoulder and said "I really don't like having to do this." Then, pointing at the chair he said, "Bend over and grab the rung" and she did so with out hesitation. He put his left hand on the middle of her back and placed the paddle in his right hand on her butt. Then he paused and told us how the Bible said "In the Bible, what we call a paddle was then called a rod and it says to use the rod on children who misbehave. You have misbehaved greatly so you know get the rod."
“Ahh,” I said in my mind, “That’s what a rod is.”
Then he shifted his left hand to the small of her back and with the paddle he patted her butt a few times and then gave her the first ten whacks spaced about the usual 1 second apart (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT).
As Sandi received the swats she didn't cry at all. I believe she was somewhat enjoying the punishment because every second or third swat she would make an "mmmmm" sound. I also noticed how her red pigtails would brush the seat as she nodded her head. Just after he finished the first set his phone rang and he instructed her to stay in place while he answered it.
During this small interlude I noticed her behind was already quite pink, but some of this was probably due to the fact that she was very light complexioned. He told the caller he was busy and to call him back in about 20 minutes then he resumed his position behind Sandi.
Then came the 2nd set (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT) and again she did not cry, but instead made the "mmmmm" and "ohh" sounds. During this set I also noticed how her breasts would jiggle on each swat and I found this fascinating. Also during this set she wiggled her butt a bit which resulted in Mr. Montgomery telling her to keep still and then commending her with "good girl."
I liked it when he said that to me and hoped he would do so again. Then after a 5 second pause came the third and final set (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT). Again the "mmmm" and "ohh"sounds continued and she finally said an "OW" on the last swat. With his hand still on her back keeping her in place he asked her if heir would be any more games during the service to which she replied with a painful "No." He then let her up and she returned to her chair and put on her smock.
I was next and I immediately removed my smock and went to the chair and got into position. He patted me a couple of times and then came the first ten (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT). I was going to try to be like Sandi and not cry and I was successful on the first set. I just breathed a little deeper before he struck me and then exhaled when the set was done.
As was now my custom I wiggled my butt as the swats hit which led to his custom, "Please, no moving please" as he pressed his left hand harder on my back and once I stopped moving he commended me with the "good girl." The second set was little faster than the first and a bit harder (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT).
My butt was really tingling, but I still managed to keep from crying. I wiggled again during set and he said "Rachel, I said to stop moving around ok?" I managed a week "ok" in reply and he again said "good girl." Then came the third set which slowed back to the pace of the first set (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT).
I tried not to move at all but I did a little however he did not say anything about it. He just pressed into my back a little harder when I started wiggling. He the said I could get up and return to my chair and then called for Janet.
Janet was another one of the only 4 African Americans at our school. She was the younger sister of Linda, the one mentioned in two of my previous sessions. Unlike Linda, who was a medium brown, Janet was very dark. She was about 4 ft 5 and had her hair set in pigtails When she got up she asked Mr. Montgomery is she could keep her smock on and he told her no because it wouldn't be fair to the others.
She shrugged her shoulders as if to say, "oh well" and lifted up her arms so he could pull it off. He pulled it off and handed to her and she walked back to her chair and laid it on the seat and went back to the chair. "Bend over Janet" and she did so quite quickly.
She, like me last year, had to tiptoe to grab the chair rung just below the seat. Holding her in place he delivered the first ten (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT) and she let out an "owee owee" followed by crying. He cleared his throat and excused himself and then gave the next bunch (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT).
She reacted with an "Oh ho ho ho" followed by slightly louder crying. Then came the third set (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT) and he asked he the same question about whether she would play games or not in church and naturally she said, "No, I won't" and continued crying. He said "Good girl" and let her up to dress.
Next was Brenda. She was about the same height as Janet, but her hair color and complexion was like Sandi's, red and really white. She was whimpering a bit as she removed her smock and bent over the chair, but she knew not to argue.
I had noticed something during this session that I had not noticed before. Just before he would deliver the first set of swats he would look intently at his target for a few seconds, like a golfer does just before he hits the ball, and then deliver them in his 1 per second pace. I also noticed that he would move his lips to the count of the swats (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT).
Like Janet, she make an "ow" sound followed by crying. Mr. Montgomery momentarily looked at us who were sitting along the wall, then looked back down and gave set #2 (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT).
She cried even loud and shook her head quite a bit making her pony tail fly around. He paused again and then gave her the 3rd set (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT). Now she was really crying and sniffing and as he let her up she began rubbing her pink backside as she went back to her chair.
Marcia had dark hair like me that was parted in the middle and pulled back with two hair barrettes. Marcia hesitated a bit after she was called which prompted Mr. Montgomery to say "Come on Marcia, lets get this over with!" She replied "But I don't want a spanking!" He then told her that if she didn't want one she shouldn't have played in the service and if she didn't want more she had better hurry up.
So she removed her smock and bent over the chair. He did is "moment of concentration" that I had noticed he done and gave her the first ten (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT) . She didn't cry much but did say a lot of "ows" and "ohs".
On the second set she did start crying about halfway through punctuated by more "ows" (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT). Then he paused only two seconds or so and gave her the last set (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT). She, like the other two, cried louder and when he let her up she quickly put on her smock and sat down. Once she sat she began moving her butt around the chair in an attempt to dissipate some of the stinging.
Last, but not least, was Mary. Mary had shoulder length blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail. She got right up, remover her smock, bent over the chair and grabbed the seat. He then told her "Not the seat, the rung" to which she replied with a non-chalant "oh" and grabbed the rung just below it.
He gave her set # 1 (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT) and surprisingly she didn't cry. I noticed that as she was getting the swats she gritted her teeth and closed her eyes tight. When he paused she opened her eyes and let out an "uhh" then resumed with her gritted teeth and clinched eyes.
On set two she started to cry lightly, but still kept the eyes shut (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT).
When the set was finished she moved a bit and he told her to be still and then said "That's right, that's a good girl." And then gave her the last ten (SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT, SWAT). She cried a loud "OW" and said "It hurts" which brought no reply from Mr. Montgomery. He then let her up and after she was dressed he again told us that if this behavior continued, so would the paddling’s and then told us to return to our living quarters.
This would be my last night session until grade 6. I remember getting into bed and laying on my stomach wondering “This stinging feeling both is irritating and feels good. Why am I so weird? Did I have a nerve defect?” Soon I was asleep and the next morning would come too quickly.
