I Started Early

I started early watching documentaries with my siblings. It was a way to expose us to something other than mainstream television. Most of them were focused on composers and artists. I've never forgotten the documentary on Franz Lizst and the Strauss family. Next came nature documentaries or those which took us to far away places and introduced us to new lands and people. Then there was the era of Nazi documentaries. Those are etched in my mind. How people can treat other human beings so disgustingly is beyond my minds reach. When I finally get around to visiting Germany, I won't go to the camps, I will not walk where mother, fathers, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, grandparent, neighbor, boss and many more were treated less than human.

Documentaries are our window into events and times that are beyond our reach. I'll take a documentary any day over reality TV.
