And So It Begins

And so begins my fiance's first deployment. We have been together for 3 and a half years. He was not in the military when we started dating, and by the time he joined I as already head over heals in love with him. I knew since I was a teenager that I never wanted to live this life, that I would do my best to avoid it at all costs. Guess that plan failed.

My fiance assures me that it will be easy and quick, and he will be home with no problems before I know it. I'm sure that when we are old I will look back on this year of being alone and think of it only a blip in our relationship. But right now, as I stand before a year of living alone, waiting for phone calls and emails, sending care packages, and praying, I can't help but think this is by far the most difficult thing I have ever done. I am petrified. Just when I think I have run out of tears, an ocean appears inside my eyes and I bawl again and again.

I have done some extra planning to keep myself busy and involved with family and friends. I am very lucky to have a great deal of supportive friends who care about myself and my soldier. I have a wedding to plan (that is probably the most exciting of all). We adopted a kitten before he deployed, and I swear this cat has saved my life. I have a great job where I get to work with kids. I know I can do this.

I don't know how many of you are religious, but I've found that faith can be very helpful when you are searching for hope and comfort. I found these 2 prayers that I intend to pray every day until my love comes home. I want to share them in case you might find them comforting too.

Prayer for the Safety of a Soldier
God of all goodness,
Look with love on those who wait
for the safe return of their loved ones
who serve in the armed forces of their country.
In faith and hope, we turn to you for comfort.
Grant that we may trust in your mercy
and send an angel to sustain us as we await their safe
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Prayer for those Awaiting a Soldier's Return
Almighty and eternal God,
those who take refuge in you will be glad
and forever will shout for joy.
Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties.
Protect them with the shield of your strength
and keep them safe from all evil and harm.
May the power of your love enable them to return home
in safety, that with all who love them,
they may ever praise you for your loving care.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
