But I Don't Dwell On It Either

Without question I have had some terrible things happen to me. I can't just shut my memories off because they are vivid and I have many of them. I had to work on it for years to finally figure out that I didn't have to purge everything, I just had to let go. The memories are there and they remind me when I need it, that I didn't make it through life this far by accident.

You are right "let go" memories are what they are, if you don't have dementia or some other forgetful disorder you will remember. It takes strenglth to overcome life's adverities and memories good or bad is useful if you allow it to shape your future in a positive way. Example, if you hurt me I'll remember and won't allow it to happen again.
