My First Band Competition

I had just learned how to play stand-up bass, and I still wasn't very good at it. I learned so that I could join Spare Parts, which was a local Bluegrass Band. They weren't very good either, so I felt comfortable. I figured we'd get better together. Now, here I was, standing up on stage for the first time...and we were competing in a band competition! I was scared to death.

We started up with the song we'd chosen for the competition. My knees turned to water, and my fingers felt like fat sausages. The audience was just a blur to me, but I just knew that if I could see them they'd be laughing and making faces at me.

Half-way through the song I calmed down a little, and it got easier. We finished up, I didn't die, and we actually got applause. I floated off of the stage, relieved and euphoric. To top it all off, we actually took fourth place! Of course, only four bands had ended up in the competition.... We won a prize though...about five bucks apiece, as it worked out. I didn't care...we'd won something!
