I Don't Want Kids

"I don't want kids" I told my mother when I was 12. "We'll see when you're older", she sighed as if children were for those with a refined palate.
"I don't want kids", I told my mother when I was 17. "You'll change your mind", she snorted as if children were the holy grail of a woman's life.
"I don't want kids", I told my mother today. "They complete you, you'll see", she said with holiday cheer.

And I will never see. Because I'm not cruel enough to have children to please my mother.

Don't ever have children for anyone else. They will feel your resentment and it will hurt them deeply. A lot of young women are deciding not to have children. It's a choice.

If I were you, I wouldn't even discuss this issue with your mom anymore. It's obvious that she doesn't get it and likely never will. Further discussion will probably just create friction between you. If she presses you on it, you can tell her that while you're very grateful for all she's done for you, you're also aware that being a good mother takes a lot of hard work, commitment, and sacrifice and you know you aren't up to the task. Tell her that if you had kids, SHE would be the one who has to raise them. As much as women think they want to be grandmothers, they aren't looking for THAT. That might get her to hush.<br />
Children are NOT the holy grail of all women's lives, and not all women need kids to feel complete.
