Even when kids have had lots of hardships, most of them still have a strong spark of hope and enthusiasm.

I'd rather work with children. You know, in some ways it's similar to working with the elderly, except that children are full of hope so it's easier.

I volunteered at a nursing home and a troubled teen home. jdkitten is right. It takes a very special person to be a permanent worker in these places. There seems to be so much apathy and lonliness.

I have volunteered years agoin in a nursing home. It was so lonely and depressing. Alot of the seniors there just sat in their rooms and stared out the window. It is a difficult job and takes someone very very special to work in one of those homes and not let it get to them.

I would sit and talk to the ones that had no family visit and it was the saddest thing I have ever seen. One lady even begged me to stay and to not leave. That is when I had to quit cause I just couldn't do it anymore.

If I ever get to that state in life, I would rather have someone just put me to sleep, like they would do with the beloved family pet. That's no way for people to live.
