I tried teaching myself once, but that didn't work out well at all.

I worked at this McDonald's in Florida, and there was a Filipino girl I had a crush on. I went out and bought a how to speak Filipino book, and I wanted to learn the language.

I tried speaking to her in Filipino one day, starting with something simple like "Good Morning." According to the book I had, there were two ways to say it: Magandang umaga (which is the correct way) and Ma a yang boon tag (which is what I went with).

When I said it to her, she looked shocked. I explained that I was simply trying to tell her good morning. She laughed, and told me that isn't what I just said. I asked her if I actually said anything, and she said "Well yeah, it sort of sounded like you called me a son of a *****!"

That was not cool, lol. :P
