You Have To Be Tough To Be A Poet

& stand in front of an audience
All sitting with little knives
Hidden in the pages of manuscripts

You must be nuts
To put up with long dinners
Where the conversation wanders
To those rotten poets who aren’t there

It doesn’t help to be drunk or stoned
Because the smart ones aren’t -
& they form gangs

It doesn’t help when you stammer
Or weep –
They write about it because they know
A weakness

Politicians & generals
Are amateurs at the game
Of real power

Bet you wonder why you do it
Until you see a perfect sharp word
Slide between the ribs

& you twist it
