I Guess I Shoulda Stole That Horse

I guess I shoulda stole that horse
But then I'd be an outlaw
Always on the run.
Ridin' alone under the stars,
Hidin' out when I saw the sun.

Ridin' south to Mexico
Tryin' to outrun the law.
Fast as the wind in my hair,
Nothin' but game in my craw.

Dodgin' the Injuns to save my scalp
Lookin' for a hole in the wall
Sleepin' on dirt and rocks and such
Listenin' to the coyotes call

But I changed my ways to a straighter path
and settled down with a wife.
Got me a couple of kids to raise
No shavin' this face with a knife.

Hard work around the farm
Fills my sun blazed days
Raisin' these crops to be fruitful
Time passin' by in a haze

A heavy load on my shoulders n' brain
Draggin' my feet sometimes
Hearin' my woman, late at night
Always lyin' there cryin'

I ain't complainin', mind ya.
The path I chose is mine, of course.
But times like this, I can't help but think
That maybe I shoulda stole that horse.
