It Isn’t So Bad

It isn’t so bad
Being an invisible old man
Sitting on a public bench
Watching two islander women
Weaving their large laughing bodies
Across the road

The young man
With the pressed blue tie
Gripping the brief case
As he runs for the train

The big guy with a floppy paunch
Wearing pyjamas
Who stands in front of him
Demanding money for food
Which he will spend on cigarettes

The Baptist Minister with his son
Always looking across the rooftops
At the darkening clouds for
When Jesus will arrive in a suit of light
& the righteous will rise
In a rapture of plenty

It isn’t so bad
